Around 1999, I remember seeing some news footage celebrating the launch of the first black nationally-run comic strip. I was happy for the brotha', but thought nothing more of it. Then, around 2002 or so, I saw Aaron McGruder on C-Span at the The State of the Black Union (or some panel discussion like it) & at the time, there was a lot of controversy over the issues presented in the strip--mainly 9/11. When I heard McGruder speak, I was like, "Is this dude trying to get his ass kicked?", but the things he said were very thought provoking. The fact that he was young & so bold blew my mind.
That same day, I decided to check out the strip and I couldn't believe I had been missing out on this phenomena! It's the kind of humor my frat brothers and I milked on a daily basis amongst ourselves & to see it on a national stage was CRAZY!
After about a year or so, I read the strip sorta sparingly. Then in 2005, I was passing by a magazine stand in Wal-Mart and saw the ad for the series. I was ecstatic that this sort of intelligence was being given the platform it deserves; right on the heels of Chappelle Show. I peeped the premiere that October & I swear it was like falling in love with Hip Hop all over again. I became a life-long fan of the series, the strip, & McGruder. (though I don't always agree with every point that's made, I can still respect it).
