BOOTLEG NEWS: "...DIVERSIFY AWAY FROM OIL." - GEORGE BUSH HASN'T CHANGED

From Star Telegram...DALLAS — As the U.S. Gulf Coast battled a massive oil spill, former President George W. Bush told the American Wind Energy Association conference here today, “It’s in our economic interests that we diversify away from oil.” “It’s in our environmental interest,” the onetime Midland oilman added. “And, finally, it’s in our national security interest.”

Bush, speaking at the Dallas Convention Center, said he believes that his grandchildren “will be driving electric cars, powered primarily by renewable sources of energy.”

“I fully believe plug-in hybrids will be a transition to electric cars,” he said. Hybrids are combination gasoline-electric vehicles.Plug-in hybrids can be recharged using standard electric outlets.

Oil and natural gas will remain vital sources of energy as the nation transitions to a new energy era, Bush said.

AWEA Executive Director Denise Bode introduced Bush as “a wonderful, wonderful supporter of wind,” who as Texas’ governor backed a state law passed in 1999 that helped pave the way for establishment of new wind generation. Texas now leads all states in installed wind generation capacity at 9,506 megawatts, more than double the generation capacity in No. 2 Iowa. If Texas were a nation, it would rank sixth in the world in wind capacity, Bush noted.

Bush said he and his wife, Laura, rely on another form of renewable energy—geothermal energy—to help power their ranch home outside Crawford in Central Texas. Bush spoke after a panel of top wind industry executives urged adoption of a national renewable electricity standard that would encourage long-term investment in wind power. The AWEA favors a “25 x 25” proposal calling for 25 percent of the nation’s electricity to be produced from renewable sources such as wind and solar power by 2025.

So... we're bashing George W. Bush on this thread. Not because he recently did the right thing at a public event recently by encouraging the development of alternative energy. But just because he's George W. Bush? I know Dubadoo was a buffon, but even he had his occasional shining moment. I mean, there are far WORSE presidents in our past we can talk shit on. Reagan, for example.

Hell, if Bush wants to see the light and start schoolin' people on Alternative Energy like Al Gore, let him. Or does his past entrepenural ties with oil companies automatically disqualify the man from urging the general public from persuing alternative energy sources? Way I look at it, who better than an ex-oil tycoon to give a thumbs up to green energy...

Agreed.

There's a fence on if Dubadoo was a buffoon or just a plain old bad guy.
I'm gonna go with buffoon but I doubt a buffoon's going to prop up green energy for a lot of people

Rick: Bush talking about getting us off oil now is as big a joke as Clinton asking marijuana to be decriminalized.
