Without a job you can't eat. Without food you can't think. I find myself in a college class learning nothing because it's kinda hard to think when you can't eat - Class of 2008
The High school class of 2008 in the United States graduated into a country with no jobs and bad politics. We graduated only to have our elected officials tell us, "opps, we're in a recession" you may have a hard time finding a job. And so we did and we do. Generally the idea is to graduate high school, get a day job and go to college. For the class of 2008 it was and has been hard to find a job when the jobs you're applying for is being sought for by your parents colleagues. For most of us that meant not only can you not find a decent job to put food in your belly but your parents can't even afford to put you in college, they can barely afford to take care of the family. So while your parents are desperate for the jobs we were suppose to occupy we kept wondering what we did wrong? We attend community college but in the back of our minds we know we can't afford to transfer anywhere.
For the class of 2008 our journey to our future had been severely altered by everyone but us, seeing how we couldn't vote until we graduated. But you may say of course there's more than one road to success and yes that's true. Generally, the idea is to go to school and graduate and then find a job that fits your degree. But school is a long term investment when done right. It's a long term investment and we invest our time and money. You spend years in classrooms learning and getting ready for your future career. This time invested has to be complimented by the thousands you have to spend to pay your tuition. For most of us who graduated in 2008 we didn't have the money to fund our education because we realized our countries wealth spread is severely uneven and most of us were broke. With no money we certainly didn't have the time to spend in a classroom because after class where are you going to sleep if you don't have money to pay your rent? Our broke parents did the best they could but everything seemed so out of their control.
Another road to success without school is pure hard work. Meaning you jump straight into your trade. For the class of 2008 this was and still is a hard trick to pull off when you the business owners have no entry level jobs for you. If they do they rather give it to someone they know that is going through the same thing you may be going through. Meaning, John "I got" Doe doesn't need school because his or her parents has the hook-ups.
There was and there still remains a group of us who feel helpless. The dynamics for us is something no one talks about because for now it's insignificant. As a writer I found myself in a period of time where I couldn't write about what I wanted to write because I was too busy living it. Today, as we gradually move into a time of stability there is a group of graduates that might never get a chance to tell their story as it should be told because they are too busy living it. Some of them give up and fade to black. Some of them loose mental control and get thrown into the system and that's it. MY friend told me about a girl who graduated from the Art Institute only to become a stripper because she couldn't afford to pay off her school loans. The dynamics for long has been so ridiculous that I know a black president who still owned student loans when he became the president of the most powerful country in our known world. True success is a process and without the adequate supplies one may not last this journey. For the me and my class of 2008 the dynamics has been ruined and only time will tell what our foot print in this country will come to be.
